Linus Torvalds slams AI bans as 'UTTERLY STUPID': Linux kernel won't restrict AI tools
ducha_aiki · x · 2026-10-15
Linus Torvalds pushed back hard on proposals to ban AI usage in Linux kernel development, calling such rules "UTTERLY STUPID" and "idiotic." He argued by analogy: demanding contributors write assembly or hand-type commit messages to prove understanding would be absurd — understanding has little to do with which tools you use. "We're not going to make stupid rules that say 'you can't use tools for X'." He expects people to do their best and understand what they're doing, noting the people he respects are those who don't shy away from new tools.
