Dev open-sources Rust reimplementation of Anthropic's Scion VCS, 7-11x faster imports than Git

Independent developer CarterT27 has open-sourced Scion (94 stars), a clean-room Rust implementation of the architecture from Anthropic's "Redesigning source control" post, with a complete agent source-control workflow already working: server-side commits, sparse checkouts, remote history queries, and concurrent merges.
The core idea is redrawing the client/server split: the server holds full history and handles Commit, Rebase, and Merge, while the agent client fetches only the code and state needed for a task—no full clones. This flips Git's local-first, human-developer-oriented model into a server-first model designed for always-online agents.
Early benchmarks on an Apple M4 Pro/24GB with synthetic repos of 1k-10k files show Scion's directory imports are 7.8-11.5x faster and full checkouts 1.4x faster than Git, though single-file commits are still slower and sparse checkouts lag at 10k files. Planned next steps include regional caching, daemon snapshot bootstrapping, virtualized checkouts, filesystem watchers, and copy detection.
