ByteDance's Diff Diffusion predicts code edit paths: 2.78x faster inference, 39% lower latency
Xiaolong Xu · hf · 2026-10-15
ByteDance researchers propose Diff Diffusion, a diffusion-inspired LLM framework for code editing. Diffusion LLMs can update tokens in parallel but are optimized for sequence synthesis, mismatching AI-assisted IDEs where edits are sparse and preserve most source tokens — regenerating full segments wastes compute.
Diff Diffusion represents denoising as structured edit operations, predicting edit paths from original to revised code, with multi-stage training and efficient parallel decoding that focuses computation on changed regions. It matches or beats autoregressive baselines on edit-completion and edit-prediction benchmarks, delivers 2.78x faster inference on public benchmarks, and cuts production P50 model latency by 39.0%.
