AI PM job roadmap: 70% of roles demand AI experience, build products before tools

HelloPM founder Ankit Shukla shared a Product Builder job-hunting playbook that already landed a traditional PM a Senior PM role at Sarvam AI:
- Step 0 Align: Collect 25-30 AI PM listings and read qualification lines, not titles. Of 113 listings analyzed in August, 70% required prior AI experience; only 1 in 8 required production experience. Name your edge: BAs know stakeholders, marketers know customers, engineers know solutions.
- Step 1 Acquire: Read a brief per skill, then build. A live build you can defend (model choice, evals) beats most of the market. Message 10 AI PMs offering to pay for 10 minutes—most refuse the money. Timeline: 1-4 months.
- Step 2 Reach out: Use five job boards, attach your portfolio everywhere, and mirror the listing's literal strings for ATS matching. 15 of 20 profiles he reviewed wasted the Featured section.
- Step 3 Build for them first: Pick 25-30 midsize companies, answer "what would I do in my first six months," send a deck/prototype to two decision-makers, follow up three times a week. Replies start around the sixth or seventh company.
Interviews test fit (risk), product sense (judgment), and AI depth (where it breaks, how you evaluated it). The biggest stall: hoarding tools instead of thinking product-first. Across 12,500 postings, the #1 skill was picking the right use case for AI. The infographic adds salary data: US AI PM comp ranges from $140K (entry) to $800K+ (staff+), with a 15-20% AI premium.
