Next-Concept Modeling: Coarse-to-Fine Text Generation Up to 31x Faster Than Diffusion LMs
Azaliamirh · x · 2026-10-15
Researchers including Hermann Kumbong and Ishan Khare introduced Next-Concept Modeling (NCM), a new paradigm that moves sampling from token space into concept space: it starts from a short latent sequence and progressively predicts finer residuals in parallel, spending compute on broad structure first.
Versus similarly sized diffusion LMs, NCM achieves up to 31x faster generation on summarization and translation with comparable or better quality, 10-21x faster unconditional generation on TinyStories/LM1B/OpenWebText with 3-5x fewer training tokens, and beats AR and diffusion baselines on reasoning tasks like Sudoku with fewer sampling steps.
