Go 1.27 makes HTTP/1 connection reuse ~5x faster: 100 requests drop from 710ms to 150ms
rakyll · x · 2026-10-15
The Go team details a major HTTP/1 connection reuse improvement in Go 1.27's net/http package.
- Benchmark: 100 identical GET requests to index.golang.org took 710ms on Go 1.26 but only 150ms on Go 1.27 — nearly 5x faster.
- The cost comes from connection setup: TCP handshake (1 RTT) plus TLS handshake (2 RTT with TLS 1.2), which dwarfs the request itself in high-latency cross-region scenarios.
- The post walks through the mechanics with a simple http.Get example and explains how better connection reuse eliminates repeated handshakes.
