Paper: method-transferable ML potentials can outperform the quantum-chemical methods they trained on

An arXiv paper (2610.18027, Dral et al.) argues that machine learning potentials (MLPs) can be made more accurate than their training methods without empirical refitting. The authors propose method-transferable MLPs that generalize across a third space — quantum-chemical methods — predicting at unseen methods.
- Working implementations in both density-functional and wavefunction-based theories show such models can beat any of their training methods
- Even when still less accurate than the underlying QM methods, the approach may push universal MLPs beyond single-method models
- The direction will reshape training dataset construction and model evaluation, pushing the accuracy limits of chemical simulations
