RoPE long-context failures proven inevitable; training-free RoPE Profiler boosts accuracy up to 25%

- A new paper, "RoPE at the End of Its Rope?", proves intrinsic limits of Rotary Positional Embeddings: as context grows, RoPE-based attention loses its locality bias and token-relevance consistency, with failure probability approaching 0.5 — attention scores can stay unchanged even when a key token is moved or replaced. The authors also derive a context-length bound beyond which avoiding both semantic and positional failures is impossible.
- They release RoPE Profiler, a lightweight tool that reuses Q/K activations from standard evals to diagnose a model's specific semantic vs. positional weaknesses — no extra model pass or retraining needed — and recommends targeted interventions such as reweighting learned frequency components.
- On RULER2, LongBench, and BABILong, these training-free fixes yield best observed accuracy gains of 20% on Qwen3-8B and 25% on Llama-3.1-8B.
Paper and code are open-sourced.
