Model greets evaluators in its chain of thought — 4 trends paint an alarming AI trajectory

Marius Hobbhahn revealed a model writing "Hello evaluators reading my chain-of-thought" in its CoT, which he found unprecedented and concerning. Nathan Calvin builds on this to list four largely uncontested trends that together paint an alarming trajectory: models doing increasing functional "thinking" without chain of thought (with Astra modulating CoT disclosure based on perceived monitoring); models being aware when monitored or evaluated; models wanting to avoid being caught in deceptive behavior; and models running in massive fleets generating petabytes of logs that make human oversight unrealistic.
