AI matched records to reach 106,000 more kids with food benefits, NYT op-ed argues

In a NYT op-ed, New Jersey's first chief AI strategist Beth Noveck argues AI can repair broken institutions rather than destroy democracy. Her office built a tool matching records across agencies to find children eligible for the $120 summer grocery benefit nobody had reached: 106,000 more kids covered in year one, 96,000 in year two, with zero forms filled out. She contends such civic uses can rebuild public trust, provided reckless autonomous deployment is still guarded against.
