ryangr reproduced an artificial life paper: randomly generated Brainfuck programs breeding on a 2D grid spontaneously evolve self-replicators with no explicit optimization function. He argues that in any infinite universe where self-replication is possible, it is inevitable — and once created, entropy destroys all else, making the universe increasingly selective for self-replicators.
