Claude Code adds idle compaction to shrink sessions before prompt cache expires

Lydia Hallie from the Claude Code team announced a new idle compaction feature: when a long session sits idle for about an hour and the prompt cache is about to expire, Claude Code automatically compacts the conversation into a summary.
When you return, only the summary needs to be reprocessed instead of the entire conversation, saving usage. The UI shows "Compacted while idle, before the prompt cache expired".
