Gemini 4 agents find new fusion plasma solutions within hours of a 59-year-old breakthrough

Researchers recently overturned a 59-year-old belief about the magnetic fields used to confine plasma in fusion reactors, then handed the breakthrough to Gemini 4 agents. The paper's "Use of AI tools" section shows the work ran on a small team of Gemini 4 agents in Google's Antigravity agentic environment: given Landreman's paper and its open questions, the agents proposed generalized solutions removing the stellarator-symmetry assumption within hours, going beyond the original findings. Gemini 4 Argon also drafted parts of the manuscript and wrote symbolic/numerical verification code. The authors stress every derivation was independently re-derived and symbolically checked by humans, who chose the problem, steered agents, and ran adversarial review rounds — a landmark case of AI agents advancing frontier physics research.
