a16z chart: old GPUs are appreciating assets as B200 rental hits $5.69/hour amid compute scarcity

a16z shared a chart (data from Silicon Data rental rates) showing old GPUs turning into appreciating assets: from Apr 2025 to Sep 2026, B200 rental climbed to $5.69/GPU-hour ($66K residual value), H200 hit $3.29, H100 recovered to $2.63, and A100 held at $1.59.
Alongside, Nathan Lambert (Trillium Labs) says Chinese AI labs are technically excellent with a comparable talent pool — "to say China is anything but equal on talent, you're gonna have a hard time" — but severely compute-starved: when he tells Chinese researchers an average OpenAI researcher can access 5,000 H100 equivalents at any time, "their jaw just falls to the floor."
