Anthropic acqui-hires Opaque Systems team, licenses its confidential computing tech for AI

Anthropic struck a license-and-hire deal with Opaque Systems, licensing its confidential computing technology and hiring CEO Aaron Fulkerson, CTO Rishabh Poddar and other engineers.
Opaque closes the gap where standard encryption ends once data is decrypted in memory: it runs AI jobs inside hardware-sealed environments that produce cryptographic evidence of what code touched data, on which machine and under what rules — critical for banks and hospitals. The tech began as a UC Berkeley RISELab project 10 years ago; Opaque raised a $24M Series B in February at a $300M valuation ($55.5M total). Anthropic was already a customer and published a confidential inference design with Pattern Labs in June 2025, while noting some AI chips lack full confidential computing support. Whether Opaque keeps serving ServiceNow and Accenture is unclear.
