The EU's first AI standard, EN 18286:2026 (a quality management system for high-risk AI systems under the EU AI Act), has been published in the Official Journal of the European Union.
Key points:
- Developed by CEN/CENELEC; the European Commission has now completed its formal assessment confirming it meets the AI Act's objectives.
- Companies applying it benefit from a presumption of conformity with Article 17(1) points a–m (QMS requirements).
- Article 17 takes effect Dec 2, 2027 for Annex III high-risk systems and Aug 2, 2028 for Annex I systems.
Further standards covering risk management, data governance, record keeping, transparency, human oversight, accuracy, robustness and cybersecurity are expected. Adoption is voluntary but boosts legal certainty and speeds compliance.
