Cut agent costs: route decisions to a cheap model, save Claude for the writing
Arindam_1729 · x · 2026-10-15
Arindam's article shows how to build a Jev-style decision model in 15 minutes: agents waste most of their budget deciding what NOT to do — emails, mentions, tool results mostly need a yes/no, yet get sent to Claude for paid reasoning with output discarded. His setup: a cheap decision model (Jev) does first-pass triage (spam? duplicate? priority?), Claude only handles actual writing; Jev handles 13% of steps while 80% of tokens go to Claude for hard work. Plus a human approval gate — drafts below a confidence threshold wait for sign-off before posting to X. Key lesson: don't make the writer cheaper, make the decider cheaper. Notably, within two weeks of Jev's Sept 15 stealth exit, OpenAI and AWS shipped their own decision models.
