Anthropic's supplemental response in a lawsuit revealed the internal project names for its Claude models: Claude 1 was Lark/Santa, Claude Instant was Eagle, Claude 2 was Tern/Project Hatch, the Claude 3 family (Haiku/Sonnet/Opus) were Wren/Eider/Teal under Project Catapult, 3.5 Sonnet was Dove, and Claude 3.7 Sonnet (released Feb 24, 2025) was Wombat.
The poster quips that some names are "extremely fitting." Such litigation disclosures offer a rare peek into Anthropic's internal development timeline.
