Stanford's Next-Concept Modeling: 31x faster text generation than diffusion LMs

Stanford's Hazy Research group (Kumbong, Khare et al., advised by Christopher Ré) introduces Next-Concept Modeling (NCM), a two-stage coarse-to-fine generation paradigm: a multiscale residual VQ-VAE encodes text into hierarchical discrete codes, and a transformer generates level by level in parallel. Versus strong diffusion LMs at matched scale, NCM is up to 31x faster on summarization/translation, 10–21x faster on unconditional generation across TinyStories/LM1B/OpenWebText with comparable perplexity using 3–5x fewer training tokens, and beats AR and diffusion baselines on Sudoku reasoning. Paper (arXiv:2610.14162) and code are public.
