User finds ChatGPT data-sharing silently re-enabled after opting out
AlexKontorovich · x · 2026-10-15
User marcusgnt reports that he turned off ChatGPT data sharing on Sep 9 and even filed a formal request with OpenAI to stop using his data (with a confirmation email), only to find the setting switched back on. Mathematician Alex Kontorovich amplified it, warning academics to find and disable the training toggle — and to periodically check it hasn't been quietly reverted. The episode raises trust questions about whether opt-out settings get silently reset; OpenAI has not responded.
