Kokon: zero-setup local GPT-Image-style photo editing with Qwen-Image 2.1 on 12 GB GPUs
Ok-Director4174 · reddit · 2026-10-15
A Redditor released Kokon, a free open-source desktop app wrapping Qwen-Image 2.1 on stable-diffusion.cpp (ggml) for GPT-Image-style local photo editing with no Python needed.
- Zero setup: auto-detects GPU and downloads matching GGUFs (Qwen-Image 2.1 Turbo Q4K + Qwen3-VL 8B encoder, 12 GB), auto-sizes resolution, VRAM/RAM split and tiled VAE
- Editor, not workflow: type a change or brush an area (Change/Remove/Replace/Add); the brushed region is marked on a reference image so the model sees it; versions with undo and upscaler comparison
- Speed: 24 s per 1.5K edit and 40 s native 2K on a 5070 Ti 16 GB; Apple Metal beta 4 min/image; CUDA/Vulkan/Metal builds
- Agents: built-in MCP server (generateimage, editimage, inpaintimage, etc.) and local HTTP API, listed in the official MCP Registry
- AGPL-3.0 code; Qwen weights are non-commercial research license; no Linux yet
