Organizing agent skills like Magic: The Gathering abilities: activated, static, triggered
1ncehost · reddit · 2026-10-15
While centralizing two years of agent-skill development into a reusable repo, the author realized skills live in different scopes and timelines, and borrowed Magic: The Gathering's ability taxonomy to sort them into three categories:
- Activated: skills the agent must choose to run — a set of procedures performed in order once
- Static ("passive"): general rules applied all the time within a particular domain
- Triggered: like activated skills, but must fire whenever a skill-defined event occurs (agent action or external event such as time passing)
The split lets the agent carry preconceived notions of how each skill should be used, increasing reliability and cutting context redundancy with minimal verbosity. The repo also includes a hermes-inspired skill self-improvement system, test-process organization, and documentation methodology.
