Wasserstein-Tilted Flow Maps: Simulation-Free RL Finetuning for Flow Models, NeurIPS Spotlight
brandondamos · x · 2026-10-15
Researchers introduce Wasserstein-Tilted Flow Maps (WTF), a simulation-free RL finetuning algorithm for flow-based generative models, accepted as a NeurIPS 2026 Spotlight.
- Problem: RL for diffusion/flow models requires sampling the canonical "reward-tilted distribution" — very hard — and existing methods need backprop or adjoint methods through flow rollouts, which is prohibitively expensive.
- Key idea: the reward tilt stems from a KL-based geometry on probability measures, sensible for stochastic diffusions but awkward for the deterministic flows used in practice. WTF replaces KL regularization with a transport-based alternative.
- Result: flow maps enable fully simulation-free RL finetuning, avoiding costly rollouts.
A geometry-level reformulation of how reward alignment is done for flow models.
