ByteDance's Seed team has announced an internal department called "Seed Model-Alignment & Preparedness," led by Yan Lin and reporting to Seed head Wu Yonghui, per The Paper. The former Responsible AI team and part of the Chat team are moving into the new unit.
- Mission: strengthen safety and alignment work, improve Agent model safety, and guard against frontier risks like CBRN.
- Notable: reportedly the first frontier AI lab in China to set up safety and alignment as a standalone department rather than folding it into corporate compliance.
- Internal view: as models grow more capable, alignment is no longer just risk prevention but a core capability determining whether models can be deployed at scale.
- Work streams: model specifications, safety evaluation systems, alignment training, protective systems, and risk monitoring, with public collaboration with external researchers and third-party evaluations.
