MI5 chief warns AI could 'change the stakes' on bioweapons, but big hurdles remain

UK MI5 director general Sir Ken McCallum warned in his annual threat speech that AI has the potential to "change the stakes" on existing and even new bioweapons. The Guardian breaks down the risk landscape:
- Rogue unskilled actors: AI chatbots could help them compile information, plan experiments and troubleshoot, though likely limited to existing pathogens and toxins;
- Well-resourced nation states: AI tools could help identify genetic tweaks making pathogens more lethal — the more immediate concern. Dr. Filippa Lentzos notes "AI does not remove the need for expertise, it amplifies expertise that is already there."
Experts stress significant technical hurdles remain, and European watchdogs advocate cooperation, ethics and guardrails over doom scenarios.
