John Robb uses an Anthropic alignment chart to argue human-AI pairing is the only durable fix
johnrobb · x · 2026-10-14
John Robb shares an Anthropic graphic showing current alignment harnesses break down as task autonomy grows — behavior converges on easy tasks but fans out wildly as reasoning steps accumulate, with the correct answer becoming rare. He lays out three society-scale fixes:
- Tighten the harness (the current path): narrow the cone of possible solutions
- Market selection: let many AIs compete under limited supervision and let market mechanisms pick winners
- Human-AI pairing: humans provide orientation for complex tasks, narrowing the cone
His verdict: the first two carry flaws that will blow up over time; only human-AI pairing yields long-term success that benefits humanity.
