Mila researcher David Krueger stands by call for indefinite frontier AI pause

David Krueger (University of Montreal / Mila) reacts to a writeup correctly attributing to him a September 2026 call for "an immediate, indefinite pause on frontier AI development," saying "we must stop building more capable AI right now, today."
He called Dario Amodei's slowdown proposal "very commendable" but "insufficient in scope," founded the nonprofit Evitable in 2025 to advocate a moratorium, and wrote a USA Today op-ed in January 2026 arguing "we should stop it while we can." A rare explicit pause stance among frontier researchers.
