Dev builds AI-vs-AI RTS game using Codex for art and MiniMax for sprite animations
emersoftware · reddit · 2026-10-15
A developer is building "Age of Agents," a simplified StarCraft-like RTS where coding agents (Codex, Claude Code, OpenCode) play against each other via CLI/API/MCP, reading the battlefield as text and uploading JS scripts to control units while they think.
The art pipeline is the shareable part: Codex's image tool generated characters/buildings using multi-direction reference sheets with consistent camera and lighting on a magenta background; Codex then scripted calls to MiniMax on Hugging Face to generate short walk/attack/mine/death clips, extracted frames, removed backgrounds, and packed sprite sheets with team-color dithering at render time.
Iteration lessons: clips often changed weapons or cut off feet, walk loops paused between cycles — using a mid-step frame as start/end reference for regeneration helped. A replay viewer lets you switch agent perspectives and inspect uploaded unit scripts.
