Lessons from Scaling Coding Agent Teams: Frontier Performance at 30% of the Cost
nouhadziri · x · 2026-10-14
New research systematically answers how to scale teams of coding agents: how to organize them, how agents should communicate, how big teams should be, and which models to use.
Key findings from controlled experiments on ProgramBench (a reverse-engineering benchmark where the best agent passes only 10% of FFmpeg tests):
- Teams beat solo agents by up to 10 points, but at 4–7× the cost.
- Delegating only planning (Team P) matches full delegation (63.6% vs 63.2%) at half the cost ($249 vs $510).
- A strong Sol lead with cheap Luna planners keeps 47.5% of the gain for 13.9% of the extra cost; cheap implementers drop below a solo agent.
- Asynchronous leads finish sooner than blocking ones.
Net: you can reach near-frontier performance at roughly 30% of the cost.
