Google's first Argon safety report finds no significant end-to-end acceleration of ML R&D yet

Google DeepMind's Gemini 4 Argon Safety & Security Report presents its first holistic empirical assessment of ML R&D automation inside the company, combining capability benchmarks, a macro capability index, AI-written code statistics, agent trajectory data, and a survey of senior frontier researchers.
Key conclusions:
- No significant end-to-end acceleration of ML R&D exists today, AI-driven or otherwise.
- Some components are being automated with many AI-driven optimizations, but full end-to-end automation remains far off.
- The team therefore assesses current risk from AI-driven ML R&D as low.
The report also lays out its threat model: differential acceleration (AI boosting capability faster than safety/governance can adapt) and misalignment risk (automation grants agents broader system access). A thread expands the data.
