Hassabis says OpenAI's math breakthroughs should have involved the math community

At the International AI Summit in Dublin, DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis called OpenAI's release of answers to hundreds of unsolved math problems "very impressive," but said DeepMind was making progress on similar problems and "would have done it a different way — working with the maths community to understand how the answer was arrived at, not just come up with the answer out of the blue." He urged mathematicians to pivot toward applied areas like AI safety, arguing "sometimes new mathematics is more valuable than the solutions."
