WFE equipment enters structural expansion as 2nm transition obsoletes legacy tools

Analyst Ben Bajarin revisits his January report "WFE Equipment - Why This Time Is Different," arguing the wafer fab equipment market is in a multi-year structural expansion rather than a normal cycle, with an updated WFE forecast coming. Key points:
- AI decouples demand: binding constraints on AI accelerator supply have severed equipment demand from wafer volume.
- N2 breaks the pattern: prior transitions (N7→N5, N5→N3) kept 50-70% tool overlap as FinFET refinements; N2's Gate-All-Around transistors and Backside Power Delivery require new epitaxy, selective etch chemistries and deposition configs, rendering much of the installed base obsolete on critical layers.
- Rising capital intensity: equipment cost per 50,000-wafer capacity is climbing from $16 billion.
Bajarin says the thesis has matched semicap reality so far.
