Running Persistent Codex Agents Locally on ChatGPT Plus: Five Lessons
ComprehensiveShake76 · reddit · 2026-10-14
OpenAI's Dots (launched Sep 29) ships cloud computers only for Pro, Business Premium and Enterprise — Plus users are left out. The author instead runs persistent agents on his own Mac via Codex on a Plus plan, and shares what worked:
- Give each agent its own computer: isolated Linux containers with separate workspaces and sign-ins cut command approvals from 3 per task to 0
- Test the isolation, don't trust it: containers are blocked from host and home network with re-checks on every start (tested on Apple Silicon with Colima only)
- "Done" needs a check: research outputs end in a file with size, source count, hash, and a caveat that sources are listed, not fact-checked
- A name and history beats weekly re-briefing of a fresh chat
- Plan limits are the real cap, and local agents die when the laptop sleeps
