Having AI explain stock moves using only SEC filings and the halt feed — four surprises
S_B_B_B_K · reddit · 2026-10-14
The author experiments with an AI assistant answering "why is this ticker moving?" using only primary sources: SEC filings from the last 48 hours plus Nasdaq's halt feed — no news, prices, or opinions. Findings: (1) filing codes mislead — an 8-K with items 1.01/2.03/3.02 looked like dilutive financing but the attached press release showed a business unit sold at 50% premium; (2) insider buys hide in noise — counting only open-market Form 4 codes P/S clarifies, e.g. a CEO buying 844K shares around $27; (3) halt types (LUDP vs T1/T3 vs T12) look identical on a frozen chart but differ wildly; (4) sometimes nothing was filed, which is itself informative. Limitations: small caps hit newswires before EDGAR. Planned additions: dilution checks and a pre-market filing/halt watchlist pass.
