Felten-Team Paper Shows How to Quantify AI Progress Exposure Across Occupations
robseamans · x · 2026-10-14
NYU Stern professor Robert Seamans revisits the AIOE (AI Occupational Exposure) methodology he developed with Edward Felten and Manav Raj, published in AEA Papers and Proceedings in 2018.
- The method links advances in specific AI areas to 10 occupational abilities, then aggregates up to occupation level to estimate which jobs are most exposed to AI
- The team demonstrated it by estimating which occupational descriptions changed most due to AI progress between 2010-2015, validated against BLS's 2016 occupational description update
- Seamans notes the AIOE was meant to be updated alongside the EFF AI metrics compiled by Jack Clark and Miles Brundage, but that dataset stopped being updated around 2017
