'LLMs as a Cognitive Virus': paper finds tipping point to population-wide AI dependence

A Tufts/Santa Fe Institute paper co-authored by David Krakauer and Michael Levin models AI adoption as an epidemic: independent-thinking and AI-reliance habits spread socially and reinforce each other, creating a tipping point (illustratively at adoption pressure 0.50, with recovery requiring below 0.40 — a hysteresis effect). Regular unaided work eliminates the jump. Supporting experiments: 196 college students who thought before using ChatGPT were more creative afterward; 1,000 high-schoolers who used unrestricted AI for math scored 17% lower once it was removed. The authors' advice: use AI like a tutor whose answers you verify.
