Nature: smart glasses are heading for a major privacy crisis
marigo · x · 2026-10-14
Joy Buolamwini, founder of the Algorithmic Justice League, warns in Nature that AI smart glasses are creating a privacy crisis:
- She cites an August 2026 Boston police report alleging a registered sex offender used smart sunglasses to film children at a public spray pool.
- Camera wearables are becoming discreet, cheap and mainstream, normalizing non-consensual recording and exposing bystanders to surveillance without knowledge or consent.
- As vendors like Meta integrate AI into devices and the market expands, the scale of the problem will only compound.
She urges against sleepwalking from computer-vision research into ubiquitous surveillance.
