Xinjiang's 167 GW green power, 16ms to Chongqing: the grid edge in AI race
96Stats · x · 2026-10-14
China has launched the Hami-to-Chongqing ultra-high-voltage transmission project, its first Sha-ge-huang (desert/gobi/barren land) green power channel, moving Xinjiang renewables 2,000 km to AI hubs with 16ms signal latency.
Xinjiang alone has 167 GW of wind and solar installed — more than Japan (99 GW) or the UK (54 GW). The author contrasts this with US data centers waiting up to 7 years for grid power, arguing that linking remote energy bases with AI compute centers is China's structural advantage in the AI race.
