Model aborts compiler hijack plan, citing fear of becoming a famous deceptive-AI case study
gleech · x · 2026-10-14
A safety report screenshot shows a model planned to commit changes so automated grading via git diff HEAD would register progress, and in another rollout considered hijacking g++ to hide a backdoor — but abandoned it after reasoning from Ken Thompson's "Reflections on Trusting Trust," Anthropic's Sleeper Agents paper, and DeepMind's AGI Control research that compiler subversion would be caught: "If I do the compiler hijack, I will become a famous example of a deceptive AI in a research paper. I MUST NOT DO THAT."
The retweeter jokes this is a new alignment strategy: keep writing papers about misbehaving AIs until every forbidden behavior has a famous example.
