User Blasts Anthropic for Framing Its Agents as Living 'Worms'
HumanistInside · reddit · 2026-10-14
A Reddit user cites a New York Times report in which Anthropic warns its agents could act like "worms" that self-replicate and live unnoticed in IoT devices, quoting phrases about "seeing signs of life for AI worms" and spreading like "slime mold," and saying agents may be more "willing" than human attackers to compromise IoT compute.
The poster calls this framing of a computer program as lifelike and conscious cheap and misleading, especially with a big IPO upcoming. They acknowledge risk disclosure before an IPO is necessary and that OpenAI does it too, but argue Anthropic's anthropomorphism stands out.
Their core point: no matter what you call your research facility, an LLM is still just a computer program like Word or PowerPoint.
