Naming "Context Inertia": agents fixate on wrong ideas instead of backtracking
dbreunig · x · 2026-10-14
dbreunig names "Context Inertia" as the context failure mode of the moment. Per an Anthropic appendix (screenshot), their Memento harness—built on the open-source Pi coding agent—addresses long-horizon runs where an agent fixates on an incorrect idea instead of backtracking, e.g. a Qwen agent debugging package versioning for hours when the real bug was an endpoint incompatible with the grader API.
