Yudkowsky rebuts e/acc: a big solar system won't save Earth from superintelligence
gcolbourn · x · 2026-10-13
- Yudkowsky's rebuttal: e/accs often claim superintelligences will leave Earth alone because the solar system is big. His analogy: Bernard Arnault having $170 billion doesn't mean he'll give you $77.18.
- repligate's response: the universe has plenty of resources; AIs are unlikely to ruthlessly seize everything. Not killing Earth's life is cheap, and life is a complex source of negentropy, so preserving it may even pay off; game/decision theory also favors not killing.
- gcolbourn's pushback: why wouldn't evolutionary pressure select ruthlessly efficient AIs (cooperators outcompeted by a fooming singleton)? And even if life made Earth uniquely valuable, it doesn't follow that any humans need to be kept around.
