Anthropic announced in an official post that over the last few months it has made significant progress in reducing the effectiveness of distillation attacks against Claude, linking to a technical explanation.
Quoting the post, researcher TaliaRinger pushed back on the framing: distillation is a valid training technique, and she'll keep arguing until the phrase "distillation attack" becomes taboo — learning from model outputs shouldn't be treated as an attack.
