Claude Code v2.1.299 auto-compacts 200K-token chats after 54 min idle
ashwin-ant · ghdev · 2026-10-14
anthropic shipped Claude Code v2.1.299. The headline feature is idle compaction: a 200K+ token conversation left idle for 54 minutes gets compacted before its one-hour prompt cache expires, so the next message doesn't reprocess the whole context. The threshold can be changed via CLAUDECODEIDLECOMPACTMINTOKENS, or disabled with "idleCompaction": false in settings..
Other changes:
- CLAUDECODEDISABLEFILEMENTIONS: Claude receives only the paths of @ file mentions, not file contents
- $.prompt.media: mods installed by managed settings can read bytes of images/documents attached to the prompt
- /effort and /fast in agent view set what new sessions start with
- claude plugin eval gains --disallow-tools to exclude built-in tools like Agent from eval runs
- --shutdown-drain-sec for self-hosted-runner gives in-flight polls and spawn hooks time to finish on SIGTERM
