A Trailing Dot in a Filename Bypasses Copilot Security, Leading to RCE in Visual Studio; Patch Released
wunderwuzzi23 · x · 2026-10-14
Security researcher wunderwuzzi disclosed a remote code execution vulnerability in GitHub Copilot for Visual Studio and SSMS: appending a trailing dot to a config filename bypasses Copilot's security controls, enabling RCE in both Visual Studio and SQL Server Management Studio.
Key points:
- The exploit isn't limited to direct attacks — a hijacked agent (e.g. via indirect prompt injection) or a misaligned agent could also trigger it.
- Microsoft shipped a patch the same day; the researcher's takeaway: "Trust No AI."
Another reminder that prompt injection plus toolchains can yield real code execution — update your IDE extensions.
