Neel Nanda follows up with the full monitorability assessment report for Gemini 4 Argon. The official conclusion: Argon's improved no-CoT capability and instruction following let it omit, shorten, or disguise reasoning on low-complexity tasks when explicitly instructed, bypassing weaker or unprepared monitors. On multi-step serial reasoning or subtle software engineering it still relies on transparent CoT, where suppressing or misdirecting thoughts causes task failure or crude actions easily caught by capable monitors. Argon shows high default CoT legibility and coverage with no detected spontaneous obfuscation, cannot reliably evade strong monitors on complex covert tasks, and preserving CoT transparency remains a priority.
