The rise of the robot 'deployment company': frontier models plus vertical hardware

Chris Paxton amplifies Vedant Nair's thesis that a new company type is emerging in robotics: the deployment company.
- These firms don't train frontier models; they build on them (e.g. from Physical Intelligence or Generalist AI), assemble their own hardware, fine-tune on vertical-specific data, and own the hard parts of deployment: commissioning, ops, support, and workflows.
- Previously, deploying robots for real manipulation work required building autonomy in-house — big robotics teams and years of data collection before a reliable product.
- Pi has announced three public deployment partners: Weave Robotics (household laundry/chores), Actor Labs (Physical AI for excavators and heavy machinery), and warehouse sorting via the Ultra system.
The pattern shifts robotics entrepreneurship from building the brain to owning deployment, making vertical integration the new moat.
