Pulse Local: a Mac budgeting app where the AI and your ledger never leave your machine
niztk · hn · 2026-10-14
Developer Niz launched Pulse Local, a free beta budgeting app for Apple Silicon Macs that runs entirely on-device: no account needed in local mode, no analytics or crash logs, with only model downloads (about 2.9 GB on first run) leaving the machine.
How it works:
- Import bank CSVs in any currency; a fine-tuned Qwen3 0.6B model turns your question into a structured query, and regular code — not the model — does the money math against the ledger
- A 4B checker model reviews every money answer; when the two disagree, the app says "not sure" instead of guessing
- That cross-check cut wrong answers from roughly 1 in 5 to 5 out of 494 questions across the last three test rounds
- Fine-tuned weights are open-sourced on Hugging Face (PulseOS/pulse-local-qwen3-0.6b)
Limitations: 12–14 seconds per checked money answer (checker can be disabled), English only, Mac only for now with Windows planned. A $29/year Connected mode syncs US banks via Plaid.
