Study: model collapse doesn't happen when synthetic data accumulates, even without new real data

Andrew Lampinen points to a new study by MGerstgrasser, Rylan Schaeffer and colleagues debunking fears of "model collapse": when training mixes original data with an accumulating pool of synthetic data, performance stays stable. Crucially, even in the worst case where no new real data is ever added, AI performance does not degrade — evidence that synthetic data can be safely reused in data-constrained pretraining.
