OpenAI found a hidden recorder in its office, used its models to trace it, FBI arrested employee

OpenAI says it discovered a sophisticated recording device hidden in one of its offices, used its own models to trace it to an employee who planted it, and referred the case to the FBI, leading to a quick arrest. Court complaint screenshots show a chatbot account tied to the engineer's spouse had asked about building and concealing a continuous audio recorder with Wi-Fi, remote listening, and encrypted storage — including details matching the recovered device's network identifier. OpenAI says no evidence of exfiltration of model weights, source code, or customer data.
